2.1 - Autarchy

2.1.1 - Protocols for industrial training and services

Currently the School provides, through the Mechanics Department of ESGC, industrial training to all students who wish to improve mechanical practice in Companies established or not in Vila Franca de Xira.

According to this, a protocol was signed with the Câmara Municipal de Vila Franca de Xira (Autarchy) in order to provide industrial training to first high school year students on motors and hydraulics repair, at Povos’ yard. As counterpart of this faculty, the Department of Mechanics provides courses on Pneumatics, Hydraulics, Drawing and Mechanics to the workers of the Autarchy.

This spirit of mutual cooperation was extended to other activities and, by that mean, the Mechanics Department designed and built a Log Splitter, electro-hydraulically operated, for the Quinta da Subserra (a municipality farm) and a lifting platform, electro-hydraulically operated, for the dinning-hall of the municipality.

        2.2 - Companies

As well as the Autarchy, a protocol was established with a company (Cabena – Cabinas de Benavente, Lda) specialized on metal works, sited on Benavente. According to this protocol, the Mechanical Department of ESGC studies, project and execute prototypes of industrial equipments defined by the company with the aim of being currently produced by them and commercialized as well.

The most important example of this cooperation is the construction of the first automotive cleaning machine for autarchy service ever built in Portugal. As counterpart, the company provides all materials, devices and consumables necessaries to the construction of the prototypes, as well as an amount of money, previously accorded to compensate the School for all expenses on energy and tool wear. Some of our students acquired specialization on MIG welding at the company.

Other machines were built to supply private entities.

Some of our students attended short courses on specialized matters, during summer holidays, on Lisnave, SA (a shipyard) and Centralcer, SA (a beer manufacturer).
